Best Trekking & Tour Seasons in Nepal
Nepal’s trekking seasons vary based on weather conditions and altitude. Understanding the best times to trek helps ensure an enjoyable and safe experience.
Spring Trekking (March–May)
Spring is a fantastic season for trekking with warmer temperatures at higher altitudes and rhododendron forests in full bloom. It is also a peak season for mountaineering expeditions.
Summer & Monsoon Season (June–Mid-September)
The monsoon season brings heavy rain and humidity, making most trekking routes challenging. However, Upper Mustang and Manaslu remain great options as they fall in rain-shadow areas and receive less rainfall.
Autumn Trekking (Mid-September–November)
This is the best trekking season in Nepal, with clear skies, stunning mountain views, and stable weather. Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, and Langtang Valley treks are most popular during this time.
Winter Trekking (December–February)
Winter trekking is possible but very cold at higher elevations. Lower-altitude treks like Ghorepani Poon Hill and Helambu are great choices for winter trekking.
Altitude Sickness & Prevention
Altitude Sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness – AMS) is common above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) due to lower oxygen levels. Symptoms include:
- Headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting
- Fatigue, difficulty sleeping, and confusion
- Shortness of breath and loss of appetite
Prevention Tips:
✔Acclimatize properly – Follow the rule: climb high, sleep low
✔Stay hydrated – Drink at least 3–4 liters of water daily
✔Avoid alcohol & sleeping pills – These worsen AMS symptoms
✔Ascend gradually – Over 3,000m, increase altitude by 300m per day
✔Consider medication – Diamox (Acetazolamide) 125mg may help prevent AMS
Golden Rules for AMS:
- Recognize symptoms early and stop ascending if mild AMS develops
- If symptoms worsen, descend immediately
- Never leave a teammate behind unattended
Essential Trekking Equipment & Packing List
Having the right gear is crucial for comfort and safety. Most trekking equipment can be bought or rented in Kathmandu and Pokhara.
Must-Have Gear:
Clothing: Moisture-wicking base layers, fleece, insulated jacket, waterproof shell
Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots, thick socks, and camp shoes
Accessories: Sunglasses, gloves, hat, trekking poles
Sleeping Gear: Sleeping bag rated to -10°C to -20°C
Backpack: Daypack with waterproof cover
First Aid Kit: Diamox, pain relievers, blister treatment, personal medication
Hydration & Snacks: Water bottles, energy bars, and hydration tablets.
Tea House Lodging & Trekking Food in Nepal
Tea houses are small guesthouses found along trekking routes, providing basic accommodation and meals.
Accommodation:
- Twin-sharing rooms with simple beds and blankets
- Shared bathrooms with either squat or western-style toilets
- Dining areas with a communal heater (common in higher elevations)
- Limited electricity & Wi-Fi – Charging devices may cost extra
Meals & Beverages:
- Dal Bhat – Traditional Nepali meal with rice, lentils, and vegetable curry
- Soups & Noodles – Garlic soup, Sherpa stew, and fried noodles
- Breakfast Options – Porridge, pancakes, Tibetan bread, eggs
- Tea & Coffee – Black tea, milk tea, hot chocolate, and herbal tea
- Limited beverages – Beer and soft drinks available at extra cost
Travel & Trekking Insurance
Trekking in Nepal involves risks, so comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for high-altitude treks.
Insurance Coverage Should Include:
- Medical emergencies & helicopter evacuation (above 5,600m)
- Trip cancellations, delays & lost baggage
- Personal accident & repatriation
Recommended Insurance Providers:
Trekking Grades – Choosing the Right Trek
Nepal treks are categorized by difficulty based on altitude, terrain, and trekking duration.
Trek Difficulty Levels:
🔹 Easy Treks (Grade 1) – Suitable for beginners, below 3,000m, 4–5 hours walking per day (e.g., Ghorepani Poon Hill, Langtang Valley)
🔹 Moderate Treks (Grade 2) – Slightly challenging, reaching 3,500m, 5–6 hours walking per day (e.g., Annapurna Base Camp, Mardi Himal)
🔹 Strenuous Treks (Grade 3) – High-altitude treks above 4,000m, requiring prior trekking experience (e.g., Everest Base Camp, Manaslu Circuit)
🔹 Very Strenuous Treks (Grade 4–5) – Remote, high-altitude expeditions over 5,500m (e.g., Everest Three Passes, Island Peak Climb)

Posted on Tripadvisor Claudia CVerified Best trek ever I highly recommend step by step, it was my first trekking alone and I felt very well accompanied at all times. Krishna and Bijay are very attentive and friendly.Posted on Tripadvisor AlbertoVerified Unforgettable experience We had an amazing experience with Step By Step Adventure. From the beginning, Krishna and his team were incredibly friendly, professional and always willing to help and adapted everything with great flexibility to our needs. We felt safe, cared for and inspired throughout the trip and trek.Krishna also supports a foundation to help children in rural Nepal access education and better opportunities.A highly worthwhile experience and also with good purpose.Posted on Tripadvisor Yurena TVerified Increíble experience Annapurna Base Camp How can I define this incredible experience in a few words? First of all, Nepal is a country that never leaves you indifferent. I would highlight, without a doubt, the hospitality of its people, its beautiful landscapes filled with temples and spirituality in every corner, as well as its gastronomy. And now, specifically, the experience of trekking to the Annapurna Base Camp. I will always carry it in my heart. The imposing beauty of every corner you find along the way will leave you speechless, and I'm sure that contemplating that valley surrounded by those mountains will make you shed a tear. If you add to all that the professionalism, the attention to every detail, and the affection towards the guests of Step by Step, both from Krishna as the responsible organizer, and from Bijai, our dear guide who will encourage you at every step, you will have an experience you will never forget. Thanks again to both of you for everything, as well as to the rest of the team.Posted on Tripadvisor Vacation40568495416Verified Excellent experience I never imagined that I would go to Nepal, but today I was able to complete Poonhill and ABC trekking. Thank you step by step for arranging and solving all my questions in a timely manner. The professional tour guide arranged the itinerary and pace according to my needs and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. If it wasn’t for our tour guide Bijay, I probably wouldn’t have gone to ABC base camp. Thank you Bijay for his professional guidance, which enabled us to complete the entire journey safely. This trip changed my view of Nepal. People who like hiking must go there once, and they should choose Step by step!Posted on Tripadvisor Kenny KoVerified Poon hill hiking "I can't thank our trekking leader enough for the incredible experience we had. His consideration and foresight truly set him apart. He always thought ahead, ensuring that every aspect of our trek was well-planned and enjoyable. When faced with unexpected bad weather, he adeptly adjusted our plans to keep us safe while still making the most of our adventure. His leadership and adaptability made all the difference, and it's clear that he genuinely cares about the well-being and enjoyment of his group. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a reliable and thoughtful trekking leader!"Posted on Tripadvisor daniel gVerified Beautiful Experience!! We had an outstanding experience with Krishna and his team! We did the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek with them and were more than astounded by the depth of experience they provided us with. From the first moment on, we felt in safe and secure and hands, as Krishna expresses expertise and knowledge of the mountains. His guides, Bijay and Bishal, helped us with everything we needed, like going to the store to rent the equipment with us or catering to all our needs on the actual trek. Our experience became more than just a walk to see the mountains. They showed us the heart of Nepal in all authenticity, which we are deeply grateful for. They gave us a strong reason to return to Nepal in the future!Posted on Tripadvisor hugorosacVerified Amazing experience What a trip, organised by Krishna and the amazing guide Bharat. Was a wonderful journey with so many beautiful nature around and very well organised during 7 days. For sure this is a must to!!Thank youPosted on Tripadvisor 丹Verified Never to forget Mardi Himal Trdk Friends invited to accomplish my first Mardi Himal Trdk 5 Days hiking trip in Nepal.Friends who have participated in the Step by Step EBC many years ago appreciate the quality of the services provided by Step by Step and Krishna. This October Mardi Himal Trdk 5 Days Walking Tour, again chose Step by Step.On the journey with Krishna and their team, everyone had fun on the 5Days trip, just like friends and family. And always worry about the condition of each of our teammates. And Krishna is a cheerful, kind and professional guide, always paying attention to the needs of each teammate. Overall, Mardi Himal gives me a lot of good memories and memorabilia.I would like to thank Krishna! After descending the mountain; accompany me on the slow bus journey from Boca to Kathmandu Airport, carefully take care of me, afraid I was hungry in the car, and bought me fruit to fill me. On the way to dinner he distributed his own meals for some enjoyment (I wasn’t very hungry at the time), everything was Krishna afraid I was starving. During this time, Krishna is always in control and worried, will the congestion cause me not to get on the plane smoothly? At the end of the bus arrival 1hr, Krishna due to the driver's halfway break, will affect my flight time, Krishna to get off to the driver explain why, please do not stop too long, he has a guest (I) need to pay for the airport, the driver really worked! At the end of this return bus trip, Krishna and I spent about 14 hours arriving at the airport and reporting.Next year, if I have the chance to go on an EBC or other hiking trip to Nepal, I will choose Step by Step and Krishna, a passionate business owner, which is highly recommended to everyone.Posted on Tripadvisor Alejandra CVerified By far the best trek experience!! What started as a normal trek ended up being a very nice spiritual connection and a lifelong friendship. It is a very Pro Company, 100% qualified to perform these activities. I trusted them 100% with my whole tour and plan and it came out amazing. I had a lot of fun, I enjoyed it a lot and also the price was good, not exaggerated. Thank you for all your trust, love and care on the mountain. Amazing life experience for us.Posted on Tripadvisor Sophia BVerified Excellent agency! Perfect experience with this agency which offers the best for its clients. The agency manager takes great care, is very invested and concerned about the well-being of his customers, offering quality services.I did the Mardi Himal hike in 5 days, and he wrote to reassure me that I couldn't see the mountains due to cloudy skies. He was in constant contact with my guide. Not only the next day I saw the mountains perfectly, but I felt happy for me as soon as I returned to Pokhara. He made reservations for my paragliding flight, for my bus to Bardia... Anyway! He didn't hesitate to do research for me, because I was traveling alone and was sometimes lost.I was comfortable and reassured that he would take charge without charging me for his services. He was never pushy and I really appreciated that he respected my choices. He is also someone who is very invested in a humanitarian cause that is very close to his heart. All the more reason to appreciate this person and the work he does. You will speak directly to Krishna. Go there with your eyes closed.
